IIam
Factory
Ilam factory, a haunting reminder of
a bygone era where a few tea seeds were
nurtured and the first cup of Nepal
Tea brewed amidst pure mountain air
and lush flora and fauna and with each
sip of fragrant tea a taste of Himalayan
goodness reminiscent of Nepal. A mystical
reminder of warm hospitality and the
generous nature of Nepalese which resulted
in a gift of tea seeds more than 150
years ago from the Emperor of China
gifted to Prime Minister Jung Bahadur
Rana of Nepal. These seeds began the
advent of the tea industry in Nepal
and with the aid of Gajaraj Singh Thapa,
Governor General of Eastern Nepal and
a close relative of Jung Bahadur Rana
was borne the first tea estate in eastern
Nepal where till today much of the tea
produced in Nepal is concentrated.
Nepal proved ideal for the growth of
tea with slopes suitable for drainage,
moist climate and good soil in which
tea could thrive to produce some of
the best teas of unique flavour and
quality. Once a Government holding now
converted to private enterprise through
the auspices of the NTDC Group soon
to be restored as a memorable ethnic
guest house through the innovative efforts
of a German Architect and will usher
in the latest sought combination of
TEA & TOURISM
